Kola Aina

Kola Aina is a venture capitalist and founding partner of Ventures Platform, a Pan-African early-stage venture capital firm with a track record of exits supporting technology companies across Africa. Before entering venture capital, Aina founded and led Emerging Platforms, an enterprise software company in West Africa, providing him with experience in technology and infrastructure. Prior to his focus on venture building, Aina worked in corporate finance, administration, corporate turnaround, and strategy, beginning his career as a financial analyst with Fifth-Third Bank after earning an MBA and training as an electrical engineer in the United States.

Ventures Platform is an early-stage discovery venture capital fund supporting African entrepreneurs. Aina is an early investor in more than 100 startups across Africa, India, and the United States, including Paystack, Moniepoint, MDaSS, and OmniRetail. Investments also include Mono, PiggyVest, and Reliance HMO. Paystack, one of the portfolio companies, was acquired by Stripe. As a sector-agnostic firm, Ventures Platform invests in companies addressing non-consumption, closing infrastructure gaps, and expanding prosperity in Africa by lowering access barriers and reducing the cost of delivering goods and services. The firm has announced the first close of its second fund, VP Pan-African Fund II, aimed at deepening seed investments and supporting pan-African expansion.

Aina’s investment strategy is shaped by founder experience, capital allocation discipline, and relationships with private-sector leaders, regulators, and development institutions. His approach is pro-founder, focusing on providing not only capital but also mentorship, infrastructure, and community. He launched Ventures Park, a co-working space and community for entrepreneurs, which houses the Ventures Platform Foundation, offering capital, education, and digital resources for Nigerian entrepreneurs.

Aina serves on the boards of several financial and innovation-focused institutions and has played a leadership role in Africa’s early-stage startup, innovation, and venture capital ecosystem. He is an advisory member or board member at ARM Financial Advisers Limited, Reliance HMO, Yemisi Shyllon Art Museum (as chairman), Trove Technologies, Acumen, CrowdForce, and MDaaS Global. He is a member of YPO and a fellow of the Aspen Institute and the African Leadership Institute. Aina holds a degree in electrical engineering and a master’s in business administration with a specialization in finance, and has completed further education at Berkeley, Harvard, and Lagos Business School.

Aina regularly mentors and advises entrepreneurs, speaking at events such as TEDxEuston, where he delivered a talk titled "Who Will Own Our Future Unicorns?" He has also spoken at TechCrunch Startup Battlefield Africa. Aina has received multiple awards and has been featured in lists including "The 20 Most Important People in Nigerian Tech" and the YNaija Power List for Technology. He is active as a thought leader, speaking at conferences, writing on venture capital best practices, and advocating for local investment in African innovation.
