Koji Sato

Koji Sato is a Japanese mechanical engineer and automotive executive whose career at Toyota Motor Corporation includes serving as president and CEO. Sato graduated from Waseda University with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and joined Toyota Motor Corporation, beginning his career in the Technology Administration Division before moving into product development. He led a team that developed the suspension design of the first-generation "Prius" and Vista sedan, and later contributed to the development of the North American "Camry" sedan.

Sato transitioned to Lexus, where he worked as assistant chief engineer on the "GS" sedan and later managed the development of a new platform for Lexus's top models. He advanced through the Lexus organization, holding positions including chief engineer of Lexus International Co., executive general manager, executive vice president, and president of Lexus International Co. Sato also served as president of GAZOO Racing Company, overseeing both Toyota's luxury brand and its motorsports division. His experience in premium and high-performance automotive segments provided exposure to branding, product positioning, and performance engineering.

Sato succeeded Akio Toyoda as president and CEO of Toyota, guiding the automaker to record sales, output, and profit. As CEO, he articulated a vision for the company's future, including the introduction of new electric vehicle models, expansion of hybrid and plug-in hybrid offerings, and initiatives to reduce emissions and achieve carbon neutrality. Sato formulated the "Toyota Mobility Concept," which focuses on transitioning cars to mobility, expanding mobility access, and integrating mobility with infrastructure.

Following his tenure as president and CEO, Sato became vice chairman and chief industry officer, continuing to influence the strategic direction of Toyota. His career, from suspension engineer on the original "Prius" to executive leadership, highlights his expertise in automotive engineering, electrification, and the transformation of the global automotive industry.
