Kirk Gibson

Kirk Gibson is recognized for his significant impact in Major League Baseball, known for his power, speed, and competitive drive over a 17-season career. Before his professional baseball career, Gibson was an All-American flanker for the Michigan State University football team, setting records for career touchdown catches, receptions, and receiving yards. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and later chose professional baseball after being selected by the Detroit Tigers with the 12th overall pick in the MLB Draft.

Gibson spent the majority of his MLB career with the Detroit Tigers and also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Royals, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He debuted in the major leagues as the Tigers' regular right fielder, contributing to the team's World Series victory. Gibson is noted for hitting two memorable home runs in the World Series, including a three-run homer for the Tigers and a walk-off home run for the Dodgers in Game 1 of the World Series against the Oakland Athletics' Dennis Eckersley. This home run, achieved while battling injuries, is frequently cited among the greatest moments in baseball history and is often featured in classic highlight reels. Gibson's performance contributed to the Dodgers' World Series title.

Gibson earned the National League Most Valuable Player Award as an outfielder for the Dodgers, becoming the first in franchise history to do so and the only former MVP to never appear in an All-Star Game. His leadership and performance were key factors in the team's success.

After retiring as a player, Gibson transitioned to coaching and management, serving as a television analyst in Detroit, then as a coach for the Tigers, and later as bench coach and manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He led the Diamondbacks to a National League West title and was named National League Manager of the Year.

Following a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, Gibson established the Kirk Gibson Foundation for Parkinson's to promote exercise and movement as part of disease management. The Kirk Gibson Center for Parkinson's Wellness in Farmington Hills offers free exercise classes, social activities, and support groups for individuals with Parkinson's and their care partners. Gibson continues to advocate for awareness and support for those affected by Parkinson's disease, drawing on the determination and resilience that characterized his baseball career.
