Kieran Rose

Kieran Rose is an Autistic author, academic researcher, trainer, and consultant whose work has influenced how professionals, institutions, and the public understand Autistic identity and experience. Rose brings a background in special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) education and public service delivery for Autistic adults to a career focused on scholarship and systemic change. Diagnosed as Autistic and the parent of three Autistic children with varying support needs, Rose draws on both personal and professional experience to address stigma, analyze traditional autism narratives, and reframe understanding through an intersectional perspective.

Rose's expertise centers on Autistic masking, burnout, and identity development. In collaboration with autism researcher Amy Pearson of Durham University, Rose co-authored the book "Autistic Masking: Understanding Identity Management and the Role of Stigma," which examines identity development for Autistic people, the concept of masking, its causes, and implications for professional practice. Rose has also published "Autism: A Collection of Essays," a compilation of widely read articles. The blog The Autistic Advocate has reached a global audience and is recognized for its impact in the autism advocacy community.

Rose's academic research addresses Autistic masking, victimization, stigma, intimate partner violence, and lifeworld approaches to care, with projects exploring Monotropism, Autistic identity, suicidality, and therapy experiences. Rose serves as an Honorary Research Associate at University of Sunderland, an external collaborator at University College London and Durham University, and a peer reviewer for autism journals. Rose has guest lectured at universities across the United Kingdom on master's-level courses in psychology, sociology, neuroscience, education, and autism, and is a regular guest lecturer at the Anna Freud Centre. Rose is also a faculty member of the STAR Institute, a United States-based occupational therapy research, teaching, and clinical practice organization.

Rose provides clinical supervision to professionals in psychiatry, mental health, and education, supporting reflective and affirming practice. Rose delivers consultancy and training to organizations across the public, private, and third sectors, as well as family support groups, offering guidance on autism-related policies, services, and practice. Rose is involved in NHS England's Autism Central project. Through published research, international speaking engagements, and digital platforms, Rose contributes to the global conversation on Autistic experience and neurodivergent advocacy.
