Kevin Schulman

Dr. Kevin Schulman is a health economist and physician-researcher whose work focuses on the intersection of business, medicine, and technology. Schulman has built a career dedicated to understanding and reshaping the economic and organizational foundations of modern healthcare. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College, the New York University School of Medicine, and The Wharton Health Care Management Program, a combination of credentials that positions him to bridge clinical practice and economic analysis.

Schulman is a professor of medicine and, by courtesy, professor of operations, information and technology at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he also serves as associate chair of the Department of Medicine. He is the faculty director of Stanford's Master of Science in Clinical Informatics Management program and serves as deputy director of the Clinical Excellence Research Center at Stanford University School of Medicine, with an additional appointment in the Department of Health Policy. His academic work spans multiple disciplines within health policy, healthcare management, and medical technology.

Prior to joining Stanford, Schulman served as a professor of medicine at Duke University, directed the Health Sector Management Program at Duke's Fuqua School of Business for more than 10 years, created and directed the Duke University Master of Management in Clinical Informatics Program, and served as a visiting professor and visiting scholar at Harvard Business School. At Duke's Fuqua School of Business, Schulman oversaw the growth of the health sector management program, graduating almost 1,500 students, and is the founding director of the Master of Management in Clinical Informatics program.

With more than 500 publications, Schulman has had a broad impact on several areas of health policy, with a Scopus h-index of 83. His research has appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and Health Affairs. He serves as editor-in-chief of Health Management, Policy and Innovation and as senior associate editor of Health Services Research. His work covers topics such as healthcare payment reform, administrative cost reduction, and the role of artificial intelligence in clinical settings, including the impact of large language models on healthcare billing and the evaluation of AI transparency in FDA-reviewed medical devices.

Schulman was the co-founder of the Health Record Network Foundation, an early proposal for a personal health record data architecture designed to build consumer understanding, acceptance, and demand for personal electronic health records. To address workflow challenges for physicians and improve the patient experience, Schulman and colleagues have proposed a new approach called digitally enabled care. He is an elected member of ASCI and AAP. Schulman is recognized for his ability to translate complex economic and policy questions into actionable insights for audiences across healthcare, business, and public policy.
