Keith Ellison

Keith Ellison has served as Minnesota attorney general since his first election in 2018. Known as the “People’s Lawyer,” Ellison works to help Minnesotans afford their lives and live with dignity, safety and respect. His guiding values are generosity, equity, transparency and inclusion.

As attorney general, Ellison has expanded the office’s tradition of consumer protection. He has fought to lower pharmaceutical drug prices, hold opioid companies accountable for the opioid epidemic, protect tenants from exploitation, safeguard seniors from scams and abuse, defend student borrowers, and hold major corporations accountable for fraud and deception.

Ellison has kept campaign promises to create a wage-theft enforcement unit, work to reduce prescription drug costs, form a task force on improving women’s economic security, and fight for economic fairness for farmers and residents of greater Minnesota.

Before becoming attorney general, Ellison represented Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives for 12 years, where he championed consumer, labor, environmental and civil rights protections. He previously served four years in the Minnesota House and spent 16 years practicing law, including five as executive director of the Legal Rights Center, where he led a team focused on delivering justice to underserved Minnesotans.

Ellison earned his law degree from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He is the father of four adult children: Isaiah, a Ramsey County prosecutor; Jeremiah, a Minneapolis City Council member; Elijah, an Army veteran and nursing student; and Amirah, a law student.
