Kazuhisa Ishii

Kazuhisa Ishii is a former professional baseball pitcher and manager whose career spanned two continents and more than two decades. Ishii was selected in the first round of the Japanese amateur draft by the Yakult Swallows and made his professional debut in the Central League at age 18. During his tenure with the Swallows, he served as a starting pitcher and contributed to six league titles and five Japan Series championships.

Ishii established himself as a dominant left-handed pitcher in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), recognized for his high strikeout totals and effective pitching repertoire. After returning from a shoulder injury, he posted a 10-4 record with a 1.91 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 117⅔ innings. That season, he threw a no-hitter and tied a Japan Series record with 12 strikeouts in a single game. Ishii earned the NPB ERA title and two NPB strikeout championships. After joining the Seibu Lions, he became the fastest pitcher to reach 2,000 strikeouts in his 11th year in NPB, finishing with a career record of 143 wins, 103 losses, a 3.63 ERA, and 2,115 strikeouts.

Known for his sharp-breaking curveball, Ishii transitioned to Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He won his first six starts in his debut season and set a Dodgers rookie record with 14 wins. Despite sustaining a skull fracture from a line drive, Ishii returned to continue his MLB career. He compiled a 39-34 record with a 4.44 ERA over four seasons, pitching for both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets before returning to NPB.

Following his retirement from playing, Ishii moved into front-office and broadcast roles. He worked as a broadcaster and television personality before returning to baseball in an executive capacity. Ishii became general manager for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in NPB and later served as both manager and general manager for the team. After his managerial contract ended, he was appointed as a senior director for the Golden Eagles. Ishii's career reflects extensive experience in professional baseball as a player, manager, and executive in both Japanese and American leagues.
