Kawhi Leonard

Kawhi Leonard is recognized as one of the top two-way players in NBA history. A two-time NBA champion and two-time Finals Most Valuable Player, Leonard is a seven-time All-Star and a seven-time member of the All-NBA Team, including three first-team selections. Known as the Claw or Klaw for his defensive skills and large hands, Leonard has earned seven All-Defensive Team selections and twice received Defensive Player of the Year honors. He was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team, underscoring his standing among the sport’s all-time leaders.

Leonard played two seasons of college basketball for San Diego State before being selected 15th overall by the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Draft and traded to the San Antonio Spurs on draft night. San Diego State later retired Leonard’s number 15, making him the first Aztecs men’s basketball player to have his jersey retired. Under head coach Gregg Popovich in San Antonio, Leonard developed from a defensive specialist into a complete player. In the NBA Finals, Leonard’s defensive assignments included LeBron James, contributing to the Spurs’ victory against the Miami Heat. Leonard’s offensive production also increased as he became the Spurs’ primary scoring option, averaging more than 20 points per game in subsequent seasons.

With the Spurs, Leonard won an NBA championship and was named Finals Most Valuable Player. In the following season, Leonard averaged 16.5 points and set a career high in steals per game, earning a Defensive Player of the Year award. He joined Hakeem Olajuwon and Michael Jordan as the only players to win both Finals MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards. After a period marked by injuries and a trade request, Leonard played one season with the Toronto Raptors, leading the team to its first NBA championship and earning his second Finals MVP award. He became one of only three players to win Finals MVP with multiple teams, alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James. In the Finals, Leonard averaged 28.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game.

During the Raptors’ playoff run, Leonard made the first Game 7 buzzer-beater in NBA history, helping Toronto secure its only NBA title. He scored 732 points during the playoffs, the third-highest total for a single NBA postseason, behind only LeBron James and Michael Jordan. Leonard was named Associated Press Athlete of the Year in recognition of his performance. He later joined the Los Angeles Clippers as a free agent.

Throughout his career, Leonard has demonstrated the ability to overcome adversity. A quadriceps injury limited him to nine games in one season, and disagreements with the Spurs over medical treatment led to his departure. Despite these challenges, Leonard has consistently returned to form, maintaining his reputation as one of the NBA’s premier two-way players, known for his defensive prowess, scoring ability, and competitive approach to the game.
