Katie Sowers

Katie Sowers was the second woman to hold a full-time National Football League coaching position and the first openly gay coach in the league. Sowers serves as assistant coach with the Ottawa University women’s flag football program and as director of athletic strategic initiatives at Ottawa. She assists her twin sister, Liz Sowers who is the head coach.

She is the offensive and defensive scheme advisor for the Braves, contributing to their national championship.

Sowers spent six seasons in the NFL, including four as an offensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers, primarily working with wide receivers. She began her NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons after serving as athletic director for the City of Kansas City. Sowers competed in women’s tackle football at the national level, playing in the Women’s Football Alliance for eight years and being selected for the United States Women’s National Football Team. She holds a master’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in pedagogy from the University of Central Missouri.

Sowers has been recognized as one of the 100 Most Influential Women in Sport by Sport360 and received the Rising Star Award from The Sports Power Brunch: Celebrating the Most Powerful Women in Sports. She was named Outsports’ Female Hero of the Year and included in the Bleacher Report Power 50. Sowers has been featured in publications such as ESPN, USA Today, NFL.com, Forbes, and Outsports.
