Kathleen Hanna, an American singer, musician, and pioneer of the feminist punk Riot Grrrl movement, was born in Portland, Oregon. Her musical career has seen her form and perform with several prominent bands, including Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and The Julie Ruin. She has also made contributions through her zines, art pieces, photography, video, music, and journals, which are housed in the Fales Library at New York University.
Hanna was drawn to feminism at a very young age and developed a passion for artistic expression, which was later reflected in her spoken word performances addressing sexism and violence against women. It was during this time that she made the decision to have an abortion—a transformative life event that shaped her worldview and fueled her dedication to pro-choice activism.
Hanna attended The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, where she studied photography. While still in college, she co-founded a women's art gallery in downtown Olympia called Reko Muse. The gallery hosted performances by local bands, and Hanna, along with her two co-founders, started a feminist punk rock band named Amy Carter.
Her initial interest in spoken word poetry as an artistic medium for expressing her views on feminism transitioned to music after a conversation with feminist writer Kathy Acker. Her lyrics often revolve around feminist ideas and challenge societal expectations, marking her as a significant voice for third-wave feminism.
In addition to her musical contributions, Hanna has been involved in activism and has become a symbol for women's rights. She has performed at the Pro-Choice Rally and spoke at the Planned Parenthood "Stand Up for Women's Health" Rally. Her support for marriage equality has also been a key aspect of her advocacy work, as she remains hopeful for the future of LGBT rights.
A documentary film about Hanna, titled The Punk Singer, was released in 2013, detailing her life and career. Apart from her music and activism, Hanna's creative endeavors also extend to her "Tees 4 Togo" project, which funds girls' school tuition costs in Togo. Furthermore, she has overcome personal challenges, such as her diagnosis and subsequent recovery from late-stage Lyme disease, demonstrating her resilience and dedication to her craft and cause.
