Karim López

Karim López is a Mexican professional basketball forward who became the first Mexican-born player selected in the first round of the NBA Draft. López plays for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association. He is the first Mexican-born first-round draft pick and the second Mexican-born draftee in NBA history, following Eduardo Nájera. Only four Mexico-born players have appeared in the league, highlighting López's significance as basketball continues to grow in popularity in Mexico.

López's journey to the NBA began internationally at a young age. He started training seriously for basketball at age 12 with encouragement from his father and competed against players up to five years older. At 14, he received an offer to play professionally in Spain for Joventut Badalona and relocated there. He began his professional career with Joventut Badalona, appearing with the junior, second, and senior ACB teams. López also debuted with the Mexican Senior National Team at 17.

After his time with Joventut, López signed with the New Zealand Breakers of the Australian National Basketball League as a Next Star. At 17, he became the youngest player in NBL history to record a double-double, posting 13 points and 10 rebounds against Sydney. In the NBL season, López averaged 11.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 49 percent from the field, and set the single-season points record for draft-eligible NBL Next Stars with 358 points, surpassing previous lottery picks LaMelo Ball, Josh Giddey, and Alex Sarr. López scored a career-high 32 points in the Breakers' win over Melbourne United.

Standing 6 feet 9 inches with a strong frame and nearly a 7-foot wingspan, López is primarily a small forward with the ability to play power forward in certain lineups. He is a physical downhill driver who finishes at the rim and is most effective inside the arc. Continued development as a three-point shooter could further expand his game. López's athleticism and defensive versatility have drawn comparisons to Aaron Gordon. Draft analyst John Hollinger of The Athletic graded the pick highly, noting López was rated higher than the 21st pick and expressing surprise at his draft position.

López was selected with the 21st overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Draft and was immediately traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. Off the court, López has discussed his goal of inspiring young athletes in Mexico. In an interview with ESPN, he expressed his hope to reach young people in Mexico, offering a visible example of a pathway to professional basketball.
