Jørgen Vig Knudstorp

Jørgen Vig Knudstorp is a Danish business executive known for his leadership in corporate turnarounds and his enduring influence on the global toy industry. He currently serves as Head of Brand and Business Development at KIRKBI, the investment and holding company of the Kirk Kristiansen family, which owns a controlling stake in The LEGO Group. In this role, Knudstorp focuses on long-term brand stewardship, strategic growth initiatives, and the development of the LEGO brand beyond traditional products.

Knudstorp joined The LEGO Group after working as a consultant at McKinsey & Company and as a university researcher at Aarhus University. His early career included teaching kindergarten for 18 months after graduating from Fredericia Gymnasium, followed by earning both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in economics from Aarhus University, where he also served as a lecturer.

He rose from director of strategy to CEO of The LEGO Group in less than three years, becoming one of the few leaders outside the founding family to hold the role. When he became CEO in 2004, the company was facing severe financial distress, including heavy losses, rising debt, and overexpansion into non-core businesses. Knudstorp led a comprehensive turnaround by cutting costs, divesting underperforming assets—including a majority stake in the LEGOLAND theme parks—and refocusing the company on its core mission of creative play and learning.

Under his leadership, LEGO returned to strong profitability, with revenue growing from 6.3 billion DKK to 37.9 billion DKK. The company also expanded into entertainment, including the global success of The LEGO Movie, and ultimately surpassed Mattel to become the world’s largest toy manufacturer.

After stepping down as CEO, Knudstorp transitioned into broader strategic and governance roles. He has served as executive chair of the LEGO Brand Group and held board positions at Starbucks Corporation and Nike. He has also been chairman of the foundation and supervisory boards at IMD Business School and was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Aarhus University.

Knudstorp’s career reflects a consistent focus on creativity, disciplined strategy, and purpose-driven leadership, with particular emphasis on the intersection of play, learning, and brand-building at global scale.
