Junichi Tazawa

Junichi Tazawa is a Japanese former professional baseball pitcher known for his unique path to Major League Baseball. After a successful amateur career, Tazawa chose to bypass the Nippon Professional Baseball draft and pursue a career directly with a Major League team. This decision, encouraged by his manager, allowed him to avoid the lengthy free agency wait or reliance on the posting system required for Japanese players. In his final season with Nippon Oil, Tazawa recorded a 10-1 win-loss record, a 1.02 ERA, and 95 strikeouts in 88 1/3 innings. He was named MVP of the Intercity Championship, leading his team to the title with a 4-0 record and 36 strikeouts. Tazawa signed with the Boston Red Sox, becoming one of the few Japanese players to reach Major League Baseball without first playing professionally in Japan.

Tazawa's early MLB career included both opportunities and challenges. Initially developed as a starting pitcher, he posted a 2.55 ERA in 109 1/3 minor league innings during his first professional season, which led to a call-up to the Red Sox after the All-Star break. The following spring, Tazawa experienced elbow tightness and underwent Tommy John surgery, causing him to miss an entire season. He described the recovery as a process of learning how to pitch again, particularly challenging due to the language barrier.

Upon returning, Tazawa transitioned to a relief role and became a reliable bullpen option for the Red Sox. He posted a 1.43 ERA, 0.955 WHIP, and 1.7 WAR in 37 appearances, contributing significantly during Boston's championship run. Tazawa appeared in 13 of the team's 16 postseason games, posting a 1.23 ERA and 0.955 WHIP as the Red Sox secured a World Series title. Over the next two seasons, he made 142 appearances, ranking seventh in the American League, with a 9-7 record, 3.02 ERA, and 1.7 WAR.

After free agency, Tazawa signed a two-year contract with the Miami Marlins. He later joined the Los Angeles Angels on a minor league deal and was called up to the majors, concluding his MLB career with 374 strikeouts, a 21-26 win-loss record, and a 4.12 ERA across 388 appearances. Tazawa also played in the Chinese Professional Baseball League for the Wei Chuan Dragons before returning to Japan. His career highlights the international reach of baseball, the challenges of injury recovery, and the evolving landscape for Japanese players in Major League Baseball.
