Julie Gottman

Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman is a clinical psychologist, researcher, author, and co-founder of The Gottman Institute, an organization focused on strengthening relationships through research-based products and programs. With more than four decades of clinical experience, Schwartz Gottman is recognized for translating relationship science into practical tools for couples and therapists. Early in her career, she helped establish a counseling center for rape survivors and combat veterans, worked with patients facing schizophrenia and heroin addiction, and served as psychiatric staff at a university medical center treating individuals with serious mental illnesses. This foundation in evidence-based care informs her ongoing work in clinical psychology and relationship therapy.

Schwartz Gottman co-founded The Gottman Institute, where she serves as president and leads the organization’s clinical vision. She is the co-creator of the Sound Relationship House Theory, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and the "Art and Science of Love" weekend workshops for couples, a clinical training program taught internationally. She also designed and served as clinical director of "Loving Couples Loving Children," a national program for treating couples in poverty, and helped direct the "Couples Together Against Violence" research study, which developed an evidence-based group therapy method for treating domestic violence. Schwartz Gottman is recognized internationally as an expert advisor on marriage, trauma, domestic violence, post-traumatic stress disorder, same-sex marriage, and parenting.

Schwartz Gottman is the author or co-author of several books, including the New York Times bestseller "The Love Prescription," the national bestseller "Eight Dates," the New York Times bestseller "Fight Right," as well as "And Baby Makes Three," "Ten Lessons to Transform Your Marriage," "The Man's Guide to Women," and "10 Principles for Doing Effective Couples Therapy." Her publications provide actionable guidance for couples and clinicians, contributing to the fields of relationship science and couples therapy.

Schwartz Gottman has received recognition such as Washington State Psychologist of the Year by the Washington State Psychological Association, the Psychotherapy Networker Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Army. She has been described as a leading expert on marital stability by The Atlantic. Schwartz Gottman has delivered talks and workshops at Evolution of Psychotherapy Conferences, Psychotherapy Networker Symposiums, American Psychological Association annual conferences, and American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy annual conferences. She maintains a private practice on Orcas Island, providing intensive marathon therapy sessions for distressed couples, abuse and trauma survivors, and cancer patients and their families.
