Julia Kaganskiy

Julia Kaganskiy is a New York-based independent curator and cultural strategist working at the intersection of art, science, and technology. Kaganskiy has contributed to the development of several programs in the art and technology field, including "The Creators Project" (VICE/Intel) and NEW INC at the New Museum. Her work emphasizes cross-disciplinary collaboration, systems design, and the creation of new institutional models.

Kaganskiy's early career included founding ArtsTech, a New York-based arts, culture, and technology meetup group. She interned at the Museum of Modern Art's digital learning department, where she curated pop-up shows for new media art. ArtsTech became a monthly event series in New York, exploring the convergence of art and technology. Kaganskiy joined "The Creators Project," an arts and technology publication founded by VICE Media and Intel, where she served as global editor and founding editor-in-chief, highlighting art-technology intersections.

A significant contribution to the cultural sector was Kaganskiy's role as founding director of NEW INC, the first museum-led incubator for art, design, and technology at the New Museum. In this position, she led the incubator program, supporting artists, designers, and technologists through residencies and initiatives, including a partnership with Nokia Bell Labs inspired by Experiments in Art and Technology. After her tenure at NEW INC, Kaganskiy became a freelance curator and cultural strategist, continuing to work with the New Museum as curatorial advisor for NEW INC's artist residency program.

As an independent curator, Kaganskiy has worked with institutions and festivals internationally. She co-curated the Tentacular festival at Matadero in Madrid and served as curator-at-large at LAS Art Foundation in Berlin, where she oversaw the Interspecies Future research stream and co-edited the book "Interspecies Future: A Primer." Her curatorial practice explores topics such as artificial and nonhuman intelligence, ecology, simulation, and hacktivist artistic positions. Kaganskiy has organized artist residency programs with Bell Labs and Accenture Labs, as well as independent artist-researcher collaborations.

Kaganskiy's curatorial work includes exhibitions such as "Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms" at the Toledo Museum of Art, which traces the history of generative and algorithmic art and examines the use of mathematical principles, chance operations, and automation in visual culture. In her independent roles, Kaganskiy collaborates with the Berggruen Institute, serving as director of media and production for Antikythera, a think tank focused on planetary computation and the philosophy of technology. Her work and influence in the fields of art, technology, and innovation have been recognized by Fast Company, the AOL/PBS documentary series "MAKERS: Women Who Make America," Business Insider, and Crain's New York Business.
