Judith Curry

Dr. Judith Curry is an American climatologist whose career has placed her at the center of significant debates in climate science. Curry is a former chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Institute of Technology, where she served as chair for 13 years. She earned her doctorate in geophysical sciences from University of Chicago. Prior to joining the faculty at Georgia Tech, Curry held faculty positions at University of Colorado, Penn State University, and Purdue University.

Curry's research interests include hurricanes, remote sensing, atmospheric modeling, polar climates, air-sea interactions, climate models, and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for atmospheric research. She is co-author of the books "Thermodynamics of Atmospheres and Oceans" and "Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Microphysics of Clouds," and has published 190 refereed journal articles. Curry is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Meteorological Society, and the American Geophysical Union. She is a recipient of the Henry J. Houghton Research Award from the American Meteorological Society.

After her academic career, Curry founded the Climate Forecast Applications Network to translate weather and climate research into forecast products and services that support management of weather and climate risk for public and private sector decision makers. She has served on the NASA Advisory Council Earth Science Subcommittee, the Department of Energy Biological and Environmental Research Advisory Council, the National Academies Climate Research Committee, and the Space Studies Board. Curry is frequently called upon to provide Congressional testimony and serve as an expert witness on weather and climate matters.

Curry has become a publicly recognized voice challenging aspects of mainstream climate science. She agrees that the Earth is warming, largely due to human-generated greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, and that the plausible worst-case scenario is potentially catastrophic. However, Curry consistently presents her view that climate science has much larger uncertainties than those shown by mainstream studies. She retired from her university position, citing concerns about bias and the politicization of climate science. Her book, "Climate Uncertainty and Risk: Rethinking Our Response," provides an overview of what can be said with certainty about the climate and offers a balanced perspective on climate risk.

Curry was appointed a member of the United States Department of Energy's Climate Working Group. She is also the proprietor of the blog "Climate Etc.," which provides a forum for climate researchers, academics, technical experts, citizen scientists, and the public to discuss topics related to climate science and the science-policy interface. Through her research, public testimony, writing, and speaking, Curry continues to be a widely cited figure in the ongoing global conversation about climate science and policy.
