Juan Manuel Santos Calderón Biography
Juan Manuel Santos Calderón served as President of Colombia from 2010 to 2018, earning the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize for ending the nation’s 50-year civil war with the FARC. A champion of sustainable development, he proposed the UN Sustainable Development Goals in 2012 and co-founded the Pacific Alliance. His presidency saw major advances in peace, environmental protection, poverty reduction, and economic growth, garnering international honors from organizations such as National Geographic, Conservation International, and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
Before the presidency, Santos held key posts including Minister of Foreign Trade, Finance, and Defense, where he revitalized the economy, weakened the FARC, and founded the influential U Party. A journalist by training, he won the King of Spain Prize for exposing corruption in Nicaragua and has authored several books, including "The Battle for Peace."
Educated at the University of Kansas, London School of Economics, Tufts University, and Harvard, Santos has been recognized globally as a statesman and leader. He now chairs the COMPAZ Foundation, serves on boards including The Elders and the Rockefeller Foundation, and is a visiting professor at Oxford University.
