José Neves

José Neves is a Portuguese entrepreneur and founder of Farfetch, a global online marketplace for luxury fashion that has influenced how consumers discover and purchase high-end clothing and accessories. Neves began his career in both technology and fashion, envisioning how the two industries could intersect. He founded his first technology company, Grey Matter, while at university, providing software solutions for clothing manufacturers. He later established the contemporary shoe brand "Swear" in London, followed by "B-Store," which earned a British Fashion Award for Retailer of the Year. Neves also founded SIX London, a fashion licensing and wholesale company supplying products to retailers worldwide.

Neves launched Farfetch, combining his interests in fashion technology, design, wholesale, and retail to create a platform supporting the diversity of the global fashion industry. The platform offered independent boutiques an opportunity to compete with leading fashion e-commerce companies. Farfetch launched with 25 retailers across Europe and was initially self-funded by Neves until securing outside investment. Despite early resistance from brands to online sales, the industry eventually recognized the importance of e-commerce and adopted the platform.

Farfetch reached a significant milestone by selling a minority stake to JD.com before expanding into China. The company later went public in New York and achieved a multibillion-dollar valuation. Neves and Farfetch received recognition from Financial Times, Fast Company, and Ernst & Young for innovation and entrepreneurship. Neves advocated for "Augmented Retail," promoting the integration of online and offline retail experiences through connected in-store technologies and personalized shopping.

Farfetch later faced operational and financial challenges, leading to its acquisition by South Korean e-commerce company Coupang. Neves stepped down as CEO following the sale.

Outside of his business ventures, Neves has focused on philanthropy. He became executive president of Fundação José Neves, a Portugal-based foundation dedicated to advancing education and national development. Neves committed to donating a significant portion of his assets to the foundation and joined The Giving Pledge. His career reflects a blend of technology entrepreneurship, luxury fashion innovation, and a commitment to social impact.
