Josh Wardle

Josh Wardle is a Welsh software engineer and digital artist recognized for designing interactive experiences that foster community engagement in internet culture. Wardle earned a degree in media arts from Royal Holloway, University of London, and completed a Master of Fine Arts in digital art at the University of Oregon.

After graduate school, Wardle joined Reddit as an artist and later became one of the platform's first product managers. At Reddit, he created collaborative experimental projects such as "The Button" and "r/place." The "r/place" project attracted more than 1 million unique users who collectively placed over 16 million tiles, representing a significant online artistic collaboration.

Wardle developed the word game "Wordle" as a private project for his partner, Palak Shah, inspired by their shared interest in New York Times games such as Spelling Bee. Initially shared with family, "Wordle" was made publicly available and quickly gained widespread popularity, growing from 90 players to 2 million daily players in a short period. The game's design emphasized simplicity: no mobile app, one word per day, no advertising, and no registration required. Wardle has stated that the single daily puzzle creates a sense of scarcity and encourages brief, focused engagement.

The New York Times Company acquired "Wordle" for an undisclosed sum in the low-seven figures. Wardle has discussed the pressure associated with the game's rapid success and noted his lack of interest in managing its business aspects. "Wordle" became Google's most searched word, with several answers ranking among the top searched definitions. Wardle was named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People.

Following the sale of "Wordle," Wardle worked as a software engineer at Brooklyn-based art collective MSCHF before transitioning to freelance work as a creative consultant and game designer through his company, Powerlanguage. He has presented at the Figma Config conference as an artist and software engineer. Wardle launched the daily puzzle game "Parseword," which incorporates cryptic crossword mechanics and challenges players with synonyms, word reversals, and homophones. He collaborated on "Parseword" with former Reddit colleagues Chris Dary and Matt Lee. Wardle's career highlights the impact of thoughtful, human-centered design in software engineering, game development, and digital art.
