Jose Alvarado

Jose Alvarado is a professional NBA point guard known for his defensive skills and on-court intensity. Nicknamed Grand Theft Alvarado for his ability to generate steals, Alvarado stands 6 feet tall and played college basketball at Georgia Tech University. During his senior season, he led Georgia Tech to an ACC title and was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the shortest player to receive the award.

After going undrafted, Alvarado signed a two-way contract with the New Orleans Pelicans, later earning a standard deal through his performance. He is recognized for his unique defensive strategy, often hiding in the corner before opponents inbound the ball to create turnovers. Alvarado has recorded 71 steals in the backcourt since entering the NBA, ranking second in that category during his tenure.

Alvarado participated in the NBA All-Star Rising Stars Challenge, where he was named MVP after hitting a game-winning shot. He has also represented Puerto Rico in international basketball, contributing to the team’s qualification for the Summer Olympics and earning MVP honors at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament. At the Paris Olympics, Alvarado averaged 15.7 points and 3 assists per game, with a field goal percentage of 48%.

The New York Knicks acquired Alvarado from the Pelicans in a trade. He delivered a standout performance in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, solidifying his reputation as a key contributor in high-stakes games. Alvarado has averaged at least one steal per game in each season of his NBA career, underscoring his defensive impact and consistent presence on the court.
