Jordan Staal

Jordan Staal is a Canadian professional ice hockey center and the longtime captain of the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League. Known for his penalty-killing abilities and two-way play, Staal has established a distinguished career in professional hockey. After a two-year Ontario Hockey League career, during which he won a J. Ross Robertson Cup and appeared in the Memorial Cup with the Peterborough Petes, Staal was drafted second overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Entry Draft. He transitioned directly from junior hockey to the NHL, setting several rookie records, including youngest player to score on a penalty shot, youngest to score two shorthanded goals in one game, youngest to record a hat trick, and most shorthanded goals by a rookie in a single season. Staal was a Calder Memorial Trophy nominee and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team.

After winning the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh at age 20, Carolina acquired Staal in a trade, and he signed a long-term contract before playing his first game with the team. He was named captain of the Hurricanes, succeeding Justin Williams, and has served in a leadership role with the organization for more than a decade. Staal became the franchise's all-time leader in games played as a Hurricane and ranks third in franchise history in games played when including the team's tenure as the Hartford Whalers, behind Ron Francis and Glen Wesley.

While accumulating nearly 500 points with Carolina, Staal earned recognition as one of the league's top defensive centers. He consistently excelled in the faceoff circle, particularly in the postseason, and set an NHL record for the longest gap between hat tricks. Staal also reached the 300-goal milestone in his career, a notable achievement for a player known primarily for his defensive contributions.

Staal led the Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup championship, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs after recording six goals and one assist in the six-game series victory. He led all players with six goals in the Final, including scoring in each of the first five games, tying the record for the longest goal streak in a Final. Staal became the oldest Conn Smythe Trophy winner in NHL history and the first player to go 17 years between Stanley Cup victories, surpassing previous records. The Conn Smythe marked the first individual award of his career, highlighting his enduring impact and leadership in professional hockey.
