Jonathan David

Jonathan David is a professional soccer player recognized as the all-time leading goalscorer in Canadian men's soccer. Raised in the Franco-Ontarian community of East Ottawa, David played for several local youth clubs before moving to Belgium, where he made his professional debut for Gent. Prior to joining Gent, he had trials at FC Salzburg and VfB Stuttgart. David turned professional with Gent, scoring 30 goals in 60 league appearances and establishing himself as a prominent forward in European football.

After two seasons at Gent, David transferred to French club Lille for a reported €30 million, becoming the most expensive Canadian transfer and the first Canadian to play in France. He contributed to Lille's Ligue 1 title in his debut season and later won the Trophee des Champions. David scored 87 Ligue 1 goals in 178 appearances and 109 goals across all competitions for Lille, finishing as the club's top scorer in European competition. His goal-scoring efficiency at Lille was notable, finishing approximately 40 goals above his expected-goals figure.

David scored Canada's first goal at a Copa America in a victory against Peru and became Canada's all-time top men's scorer with his 31st goal in a CONCACAF Nations League match against Suriname. At the FIFA World Cup, David scored a hat trick in a 6-0 win against Qatar, marking Canada's first World Cup victory and becoming the first North American player in 96 years to score a World Cup hat trick.
