Jonathan Cohn

Jonathan Cohn is an American author and journalist specializing in health care policy and social welfare reporting. Cohn writes primarily on United States public policy and political issues. He studied at Harvard University, where he served as president of The Harvard Crimson.

Before joining The New Republic, Cohn was executive editor at The American Prospect. At The New Republic, he focused on health care coverage at a time when the topic received little attention. Cohn has also contributed to Boston Globe, Mother Jones, The New York Times, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Slate, and Washington Post. He later became a senior national correspondent at The Huffington Post and writes the newsletter "The Breakdown," published by The Bulwark.

Cohn has covered domestic and social policies with a focus on health care and social welfare. His book "Sick: The Untold Story of America's Health Care Crisis—and the People Who Pay the Price" examines the U.S. health care crisis by presenting personal stories and advocating for universal health insurance financed by the government. The book was a finalist for the Robert F. Kennedy and Helen Bernstein book awards.

Cohn's book "The Ten Year War" provides an account of the political battle over the Affordable Care Act, drawing on interviews, private diaries, emails, and memos to explore the law's development and impact on Americans.

Cohn has received the AHCJ Excellence in Health Journalism Award for "The Robot Will See You Now," the Sidney Hillman Award for "The Treatment," and the Harry Chapin Media Award for "Sick." He serves as a lecturer in public policy at the University of Michigan's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and has been a fellow with the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, Demos, and the University of Michigan's Griffith Leadership Center. Cohn is recognized for his in-depth reporting and ability to explain complex health care policy issues to a broad audience.
