Jon Runyan

Jon Runyan has built a career spanning professional football, national politics, and league administration. Runyan attended the University of Michigan on a football scholarship, becoming the first in his family to attend college. He played for the Michigan Wolverines and was named a first-team All-Big Ten Conference selection. Drafted by the Houston Oilers in the fourth round, Runyan played 207 games over 14 seasons in the National Football League with Houston/Tennessee, Philadelphia, and San Diego, earning a Pro Bowl selection during his career.

Runyan spent nine seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, signing a six-year, $30 million contract as an unrestricted free agent, which at the time made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. He played in every regular-season and postseason game during his tenure with the Eagles, starting 144 regular-season and 17 postseason games. Alongside Tra Thomas, Runyan anchored the Eagles' offensive line, starting a franchise record 134 regular-season games together. During this period, the Eagles reached the playoffs seven times, won the NFC East five times, advanced to the NFC Championship Game five times, and appeared in Super Bowl XXXIX. Hall of Fame defensive end Michael Strahan recognized Runyan as a formidable opponent during his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction speech. The Philadelphia Eagles later inducted Runyan into their Hall of Fame alongside Thomas.

After retiring from professional football, Runyan entered public service, becoming the fourth NFL player to serve in Congress. He represented New Jersey's Third Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving on the Armed Services Committee, Veterans Affairs Committee, and Natural Resources Committee. Runyan also participated in several caucuses, including the Bipartisan Military Veterans Caucus, the Congressional Brain Injury Caucus, and the Military Family Caucus.

Following his congressional service, Runyan returned to the NFL as Vice President of Policy and Rules Administration. In this role, he oversees club and game-related initiatives, serves as the commissioner’s designee for on-field discipline, and supervises the uniform and protective equipment inspection program. Runyan collaborates with the competition committee, player safety advisory panel, head coaches, and team equipment managers, focusing on communication, consistent rule application, and player education to reduce on-field violations. Runyan’s experience across professional sports, government, and league administration positions him as a knowledgeable leader on topics such as leadership, resilience, and the intersection of sports and public policy.
