Jon Klassen Biography
Jon Klassen is a Canadian writer and illustrator of children's books and an animator. He won both the American Caldecott Medal and the British Kate Greenaway Medal for children's book illustration, recognizing the 2012 picture book "This Is Not My Hat," which he also wrote. He is the first person to win both awards for the same work.
"This Is Not My Hat" is a companion to Klassen's 2011 picture book, "I Want My Hat Back," his first as both writer and illustrator. Both books appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list for more than 40 weeks. By April 2014, one or the other had been translated into 22 languages, and together they had sold more than one million copies worldwide. Both books were recommended for children ages 5 and up by the Greenaway judges. Klassen completed his "hat" trilogy with the publication of "We Found a Hat" in 2016.
Klassen has worked as an illustrator for feature animated films, music videos and editorial pieces. His animation credits include design work for DreamWorks Feature Animation and LAIKA Studios on the feature film "Coraline." He also designed a BBC spot for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, which won a BAFTA Award that year.
Originally from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Klassen now lives in Los Angeles.
