John-Arne Røttingen Biography
John-Arne Røttingen is Chief Executive Officer of the Wellcome Trust, the UK‑based global charitable foundation that funds scientific research to address urgent health challenges worldwide. He joined Wellcome as CEO in January 2024 and leads the organization’s efforts to support discovery science, infectious disease research, mental health initiatives, and the health impacts of climate change.
A Norwegian physician, medical scientist, and global health leader, Røttingen previously served as Ambassador for Global Health at Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was founding CEO of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), which helps accelerate vaccine and pandemic preparedness efforts, and has led the Research Council of Norway.
Røttingen has held academic appointments at institutions including the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the University of Oslo, and his research spans basic science, epidemiology, clinical trials, health services research, and international health policy. He has played leading roles in major global health initiatives, including the Ebola vaccine trial in Guinea and the WHO COVID‑19 Solidarity Trial.
