John Stockton

John Stockton is recognized as one of the top point guards in professional basketball history. Selected 16th overall by the Utah Jazz in the NBA Draft, Stockton spent his entire 19-year career with the franchise. He played collegiate basketball at Gonzaga University, where he became the school's all-time leader in assists and steals. Stockton became the Jazz's starting point guard in his fourth season and led the league in assists in his first year in that role. This marked the beginning of nine consecutive seasons as the NBA's assist leader, including a single-season record of 1,164 assists.

Stockton's statistical achievements in the NBA are significant. He earned 10 All-Star selections and became the league's all-time leader in both assists and steals, finishing his career with 15,806 assists and 3,265 steals. He led the league in steals twice and played all 82 games in 17 of his 19 seasons. Stockton maintained a career shooting percentage of 51.5 percent, a notable figure for a guard. Many of his assists were to power forward Karl Malone, forming one of the most effective pick-and-roll partnerships in NBA history. At 6 feet 1 inch, Stockton was known for his tenacious and energetic play.

During Stockton's tenure, the Jazz consistently reached the NBA playoffs and advanced to the Western Conference Finals five times in seven years. A defining moment in his career was a buzzer-beating three-pointer over Charles Barkley in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals, sending Utah to its first NBA Finals appearance. The Jazz reached consecutive NBA Finals, facing the Chicago Bulls in both series. Internationally, Stockton was a member of the 1992 Barcelona Dream Team, winning a gold medal alongside Karl Malone, and earned a second Olympic gold in Atlanta.

Stockton's contributions to basketball have been recognized with numerous honors. He was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history and inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame both individually and as a member of the 1992 United States Olympic basketball team. Stockton was also named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. UCLA coach John Wooden once noted Stockton as the NBA player he most enjoyed watching.

After his playing career, Stockton authored the autobiography "Assisted," which details his journey from childhood to the NBA, his work ethic, and his relationships with other basketball figures. The book provides insights into his personal and professional life, reflecting the qualities that defined his basketball career and his ongoing influence in the sport.
