John Starks

John Starks is recognized as a significant figure in New York Knicks history, known for his role as a shooting guard and his impact at Madison Square Garden. Starks' journey to the NBA is often cited as an underdog story in professional basketball. Despite playing only one year of high school basketball and attending four colleges in four years, he developed his skills and attracted the attention of NBA scouts. After going undrafted, Starks had a brief tenure with the Golden State Warriors and played in the Continental Basketball Association and World Basketball League, earning All-Star honors in both leagues. His opportunity with the Knicks arose after a notable tryout, during which an injury prevented the team from releasing him, ultimately securing his place on the roster.

Starks became the starting shooting guard and played eight seasons with the Knicks. During his tenure, he was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team, selected as an NBA All-Star, and received the league's Sixth Man of the Year Award. Starks holds the franchise record for three-point field goals and was the first player in NBA history to make 200 three-pointers in a season. He averaged 14.1 points per game and remains among the Knicks' all-time leaders in points, assists, and steals.

Starks is widely known for "The Dunk," a pivotal play during the Eastern Conference Finals against Chicago, and for his contributions to the Knicks' run to the NBA Finals. Starks established the John Starks Foundation, which provides scholarships to college-bound students in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, and hosts an annual celebrity golf tournament to support the foundation's 3-Point Scholarship.
