John Patrick Shanley

An accomplished and award-winning writer and director, John Patrick Shanley has written extensively for both film and the stage. His play “Doubt: A Parable” — which opened off-Broadway in 2004 — became his first work to transfer to Broadway and later to the screen. The stage version won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play, along with numerous honors including the Drama Desk Award, Lucille Lortel Award, Obie Award, and others. The film adaptation, which Shanley both wrote and directed, earned multiple Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Shanley’s original screenplays include “Five Corners”, “Moonstruck” — for which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and the Writers Guild of America Award — “The January Man”, and “Joe Versus the Volcano”, which he also directed. He wrote the adapted screenplay for “Alive”, and his screenplay work extends into recent projects such as “Wild Mountain Thyme” (2020).

His prolific body of acclaimed plays — many directed by Shanley in their original productions — includes “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea”, “Savage in Limbo”, “The Dreamer Examines His Pillow”, “Beggars in the House of Plenty”, “Where’s My Money?”, “Italian American Reconciliation”, “Four Dogs and a Bone”, “Dirty Story” (Drama Desk nomination), “Outside Mullingar” (Tony nomination), and many others. His works are widely performed around the world.

Most recently, he has remained active in theater with new premieres: “Brooklyn Laundry” debuted in early 2024 at the Manhattan Theatre Club, and “The Pushover” is set to have its world premiere Off-Broadway in April 2026.

In addition to his Pulitzer, Tony, Academy, and Writers Guild honors, Shanley’s accolades include lifetime achievement recognition from the Writers Guild of America, and his work has been translated into multiple languages and produced internationally.
