John Landis is a filmmaker known for his contributions to Hollywood as a writer, director, and actor, particularly in the genres of comedy and horror. Landis began his career in the mail room at 20th Century Fox and, after leaving high school, traveled to Yugoslavia at age 18 to work as a production assistant on the film "Kelly's Heroes." He later worked as an actor, extra, and stuntman in Spanish and Italian westerns. Upon returning to the United States, Landis made his feature debut as a writer-director at age 21 with "Schlock," a film that marked the beginning of his collaboration with makeup artist Rick Baker. Baker later won the first Academy Award for Best Makeup for Landis' film "An American Werewolf in London."
After gaining experience as a writer, actor, and production assistant, Landis directed "The Kentucky Fried Movie" in collaboration with the Zucker brothers and Jim Abrahams. "National Lampoon's Animal House" achieved significant box office success and is recognized for initiating the "gross-out" comedy genre in Hollywood. Landis followed this with "The Blues Brothers," further establishing his reputation in the film industry. Both "National Lampoon's Animal House" and "The Blues Brothers" have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for their cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
Landis expanded his influence beyond feature films by directing Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video, which was conceived as a short film with feature-level production values. "Thriller" became the first music video inducted into the U.S. National Film Registry. Landis also directed Jackson's "Black or White" music video.
In television, Landis served as executive producer and director for series including "Dream On," "Weird Science," "Sliders," and "Masters of Horror." He received an Emmy Award for the documentary "Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project." Landis has lectured at film schools and universities such as Yale, Harvard, NYU, UCLA, and USC.
Landis has been recognized internationally, receiving honors such as Chevalier dans l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government, the Federico Fellini Prize from the Rimini Cinema Festival, and the George Eastman Scholar designation from The Eastman House. His career has been celebrated with retrospectives at the Edinburgh Film Festival and the Torino Film Festival, and he has received career achievement awards from the Sitges Film Festival, the India International Film Festival in Goa, and the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal. Landis' filmography spans comedy, horror, music videos, and documentaries, and his work continues to influence American cinema and popular culture.
