John Gottman

Dr. John Gottman is a clinical psychologist known for his research in the science of human relationships, particularly the dynamics of couples during conflict. Gottman developed methodologies to analyze interactions that predict marital stability and the likelihood of divorce. He holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics-physics from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a master's in mathematics-psychology from MIT, and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Wisconsin. His integration of mathematical analysis and psychological insight has shaped his approach to relationship research.

At the University of Washington, Gottman and his colleagues established an apartment laboratory, referred to as the Love Lab by the media, where they studied the foundations of friendship, intimacy, and conflict in relationships. Collaborating with psychologist Robert Levenson, Gottman conducted studies using observational techniques and physiological measures to identify behaviors that distinguish successful relationships from those at risk. His research introduced concepts such as the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse"—criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling—and demonstrated the predictive power of behavioral patterns in marital outcomes. Gottman’s work has included research on more than 3,000 couples, focusing on relationship stability, divorce prediction, and the science of marriage.

Together with Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, he co-founded The Gottman Institute, which provides relationship education and couples therapy training for mental health professionals. The Institute offers workshops, a multi-level training series, and a certification program for therapists specializing in couples therapy. Gottman is the author or co-author of more than 250 academic articles and over 50 books, including "Fight Right," "The Love Prescription," "Eight Dates," "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work," "What Makes Love Last," "The Science of Trust," "The Relationship Cure," and "Why Marriages Succeed or Fail."

Gottman has received multiple honors, including four National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Awards, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Distinguished Research Scientist Award, the American Family Therapy Academy Award for Most Distinguished Contributor to Family Systems Research, the American Psychological Association Division of Family Psychology Presidential Citation for Outstanding Lifetime Research Contribution, and the National Council of Family Relations Burgess Award for Outstanding Career in Theory and Research. He and Julie Gottman were jointly recognized with the Psychotherapy Networker Lifetime Achievement Award for advancing evidence-based psychotherapy and promoting relational health. He also received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison for his contributions to relationship science.

Gottman’s work has been featured on CBS Morning News, Good Morning America, Oprah, TED Mainstage, and The TODAY Show, as well as in The Atlantic, Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, TIME, The Wall Street Journal, and Vanity Fair. His research and clinical expertise continue to influence the fields of couples therapy, marriage counseling, and relationship science.
