John D'Angelo

Dr. John D'Angelo serves as president and chief executive officer of Northwell Health, the largest nonprofit health system in the Northeast. With more than 25 years of experience in health care administration and emergency medicine, D'Angelo leads Northwell's network of 28 hospitals and 106,000 employees, including over 1,000 outpatient facilities, 22,000 nurses, and more than 20,000 physicians, with an operating budget of $22.6 billion. Northwell provides care for more than 3 million people annually in the New York metropolitan area, including Long Island, the Hudson Valley, western Connecticut, and surrounding regions.

D'Angelo earned his medical degree from SUNY Stony Brook and completed a residency in emergency medicine at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. He began his career as an attending physician at Holyoke Hospital in Massachusetts before moving to Glen Cove Hospital, where he was later appointed chair of the emergency department.

D'Angelo's career at Northwell includes roles as senior vice president of emergency medicine, where he managed 18 emergency departments and more than 60 urgent care centers, and executive vice president of the Central Region, overseeing a network of six hospitals, more than 270 ambulatory practice locations, and 24,000 employees serving a population of 2.8 million in western Nassau County and Queens. He has also served as associate professor of emergency medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and as medical director to multiple EMS agencies and in the United States Army Reserve.

D'Angelo has contributed to clinical and operational innovation at Northwell, including co-leading the system's sepsis response with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, which resulted in a significant reduction in mortality and earned a John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award. He was involved in the opening of Manhattan's first free-standing emergency department, Lenox Health Greenwich Village, and co-led the development of "Real-Time Actionable Data," a platform that improved operational data visibility across Northwell. This initiative received Northwell's top internal award. D'Angelo has also been recognized by Becker's Hospital Review among "CEO Influencers to Know."

During the COVID-19 pandemic, D'Angelo led Northwell's operational response as operations chief for the system command center and was later appointed chief of integrated operations. The data solutions developed by his team played a key role in the pandemic response, including the creation of a comprehensive hospital command center suite at North Shore University Hospital. As a U.S. Army veteran, D'Angelo led an initiative to supplement wages for Northwell staff called to active military duty, a program to which Northwell has dedicated more than $1.6 million.

As CEO, D'Angelo focuses on advancing Northwell's growth, integrating the Nuvance Health merger, and driving digital transformation, including the implementation of Epic. Northwell and Nuvance have formed an integrated regional health system serving more than 13 million people across New York and Connecticut. Drawing on his background in emergency medicine and health system leadership, D'Angelo emphasizes adaptable, patient-centric leadership as essential for navigating the evolving health care landscape.
