Joel Rubin is a journalist and editor, serving as the first California senior policy editor at POLITICO. In this role, Rubin oversees coverage of major state issues including climate, energy, education, transportation, health, labor, technology, and the state budget. He manages POLITICO’s reporting to provide information for policymakers, industry leaders, and advocates across California and beyond. Rubin’s editorial leadership supports POLITICO’s expansion, guiding policy teams across multiple bureaus to produce enterprise journalism.
Before joining POLITICO, Rubin spent more than two decades at the Los Angeles Times, where he held editorial positions such as deputy business editor, associate editor for new initiatives, and assistant metro editor. As a reporter, he covered federal courts, the Los Angeles Police Department, and public schools, and contributed to Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of breaking news events, including the San Bernardino terror attack and Southern California wildfires.
