Joe Studwell

Joe Studwell is a British journalist, author, and public speaker with extensive experience in East Asian economies. Studwell was the founding editor of China Economic Quarterly, an English-language journal focused on the Chinese economy, and co-founded the Asian research and advisory firm Dragonomics, now known as GaveKal Dragonomics, where he served as a director. He holds a doctorate from the University of Cambridge and is a senior visiting fellow at the United Kingdom's Overseas Development Institute. Studwell has contributed to The Economist, Economist Intelligence Unit, Financial Times, Asian Wall Street Journal, and Far Eastern Economic Review, and has worked in television and radio.

Studwell is the author of "The China Dream: The Quest for the Greatest Untapped Market on Earth," which examines the complexities of the Chinese market. He followed with "Asian Godfathers," offering analysis of Southeast Asia's business leaders and the historic, economic, and political influences shaping the region.

Studwell is widely recognized for "How Asia Works," a book that analyzes the economic development of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and China. The book explores land policy, manufacturing, and finance, arguing that land reform has been critical to the region's economic growth. "How Asia Works" has been cited as an influential work on industrial policy and economic development.

Studwell is also the author of "How Africa Works: Dynamism and Atrophy on the World's Last Developmental Frontier," which explores development policy in Africa through case studies such as Rwanda and Botswana. The book addresses themes including settler colonialism, land ownership, mineral extraction, agricultural productivity, disease control, and state capacity, analyzing how control over land, labor, and institutions impacts economic development. Studwell is an experienced meeting chair and panelist, known for his expertise in economic policy, international development, and Asian and African economic analysis.
