Joe Lacob

Joe Lacob is a venture capitalist and sports executive best known as the principal owner and governor of the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Golden State Valkyries of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Under his ownership, the Warriors have become one of the most successful and valuable franchises in professional sports.

Lacob made his fortune in venture capital. He was a longtime partner at Kleiner Perkins, one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent venture capital firms, where he invested in and helped guide companies in life sciences, clean technology and technology sectors. His background in science and business—he holds advanced degrees in public health and business—shaped his data-driven, analytics-focused approach to sports ownership.

In 2010, Lacob led an ownership group that purchased the Warriors for $450 million, a then-record price for an NBA franchise. At the time, the team had not won a championship since 1975. Over the next decade, the Warriors transformed into a modern dynasty, winning multiple NBA championships behind stars including Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. The franchise also moved into the state-of-the-art Chase Center in San Francisco in 2019, a privately financed arena that significantly increased the team’s business valuation.

Beyond championships, Lacob has emphasized innovation, sports science, and organizational culture. His ownership group expanded into women’s professional basketball with the launch of the Golden State Valkyries, reflecting a commitment to growing the game and investing in the Bay Area sports market.
