Joe Girardi

Joe Girardi is a former Major League Baseball player and manager. Girardi serves as a game analyst for Cubs telecasts on Marquee Sports Network and is slated to join Yankees broadcasts on YES Network in 2024. He is known for his leadership in both the dugout and the broadcast booth.

He attended Northwestern University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering while distinguishing himself academically as a three-time Academic All-American and two-time All-Big Ten selection. Girardi made his MLB debut in 1989 and enjoyed a 15-year playing career with the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Yankees. Primarily a catcher, he was part of three World Series championship teams with the Yankees in 1996 and 1998–99 and appeared in six postseason runs during his career. Girardi was selected to the 2000 All-Star Game during his second stint with the Cubs.

After retiring as a player in 2003, Girardi transitioned briefly into broadcasting with the YES Network in 2004, where he served as a color commentator and hosted the youth-focused program “Yankee on Deck.” He soon returned to baseball operations, joining the Yankees as a bench coach and catching instructor.

Girardi began his managerial career in 2006 with the Miami Marlins, earning the National League Manager of the Year after guiding a low-payroll roster into Wild Card contention. He returned to New York in 2008 as Yankees manager and led the team to the 2009 World Series championship. During his decade-long tenure, he also captured the 2011 AL East title and reached personal milestones of 500 managerial games in 2012 and 1,500 games in 2016.

Girardi later managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 2020 to 2022 before returning to broadcasting. He has worked as an analyst for MLB Network, Fox Sports, and the YES Network. Girardi also managed the United States national team during the 2019 WBSC Premier12 tournament.
