Jock Clear

Jock Clear is a Formula One engineer with a career spanning more than three decades and over 500 Grand Prix races. Clear began his motorsport career at Lola Cars as a design engineer before moving to Benetton Formula as head of composite design. He later served as senior designer at Leyton House Racing and joined Team Lotus, where he became Johnny Herbert's race engineer.

After Lotus, Clear transferred to Williams F1, where he engineered David Coulthard, who achieved his first Grand Prix victory in Portugal and finished third in the drivers' championship. Clear then became Jacques Villeneuve's race engineer at Williams, supporting Villeneuve during his world championship-winning season. When Villeneuve moved to British American Racing, Clear continued as his engineer until the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix. Clear remained with the team through its transitions, including its championship-winning season as Brawn GP.

Following Brawn GP's transition to Mercedes AMG Formula One Team, Clear worked with Michael Schumacher and later contributed to the team's success alongside Lewis Hamilton during Mercedes' dominant championship years. His expertise in race engineering and high-performance motorsport environments has been integral to several championship campaigns.

Clear later joined Scuderia Ferrari, bringing extensive experience to the team and working with eight World Champion drivers, including Schumacher, Hamilton, and Villeneuve. At Ferrari, he served as chief performance engineer and driver coach to Charles Leclerc, while also overseeing the Ferrari Driver Academy and nurturing talents such as Oliver Bearman and Dino Beganovic. Clear also held the position of Head of Racing at Scuderia Ferrari before focusing on the development of young drivers within the academy.

Clear was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering by Heriot-Watt University in recognition of his contributions to engineering in motorsport. After more than a decade at Maranello, Clear departed Ferrari, citing personal reasons and work-life balance after a long tenure in Formula One. Throughout his career, Clear has combined technical expertise with an understanding of high-performance environments, teamwork, and talent development in motorsport engineering.
