Joaquina Kalukango

Joaquina Kalukango is a Tony Award-winning American actress and singer celebrated for her powerful performances on Broadway and screen. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, she is a graduate of the Juilliard School. Kalukango's parents are of Angolan descent and arrived in the United States as political refugees. Her heritage influences her commitment to roles that showcase the Black experience.

Kalukango's breakthrough came with her portrayal of Kaneisha in Jeremy O. Harris's provocative play "Slave Play," earning her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play in 2020. She gained widespread acclaim for her role as Nelly O'Brien in the Broadway musical "Paradise Square," set in Civil War-era New York City. Her performance won her the 2022 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Beyond the stage, Kalukango has appeared in film and television, including roles in "One Night in Miami...," "When They See Us," and "Lovecraft Country." She stars in the upcoming television movie, "Robin Roberts Presents: I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story." Kalukango has also showcased her vocal talents in cabaret venues, including 54 Below, where she delivers powerful interpretations of songs like Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides, Now." Her performances are characterized by emotional depth and vocal prowess, further establishing her reputation as a formidable singer.
