Joann Pittman

Joann Pittman is a consultant, trainer, researcher, and writer specializing in China cross-cultural engagement. Pittman has focused her career on preparing individuals and organizations for the challenges of cross-cultural living and international work. She first traveled to China to teach English and ultimately spent 28 years living in Zhengzhou, Changchun, and Beijing. During her time in China, Pittman worked as a teacher, program director, language learning coach, and cross-cultural trainer, supporting organizations and businesses engaged in China.

Pittman has conducted extensive study and research in Chinese language, history, and contemporary society, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. She has served as adjunct faculty at University of Northwestern-St. Paul, Wheaton College, and Taylor University, teaching courses on Chinese history, contemporary society, and Chinese language. Pittman holds a Bachelor of Arts in social sciences from University of Northwestern-St. Paul and a Master of Arts in teaching from University of St. Thomas.

Pittman serves as vice president of partnership and China engagement and editor of ZGBriefs at ChinaSource. Her areas of expertise include China briefings, cross-cultural training, Chinese language learning, language-acquisition training, and strategic planning. Pittman is recognized for her ability to make complex cultural topics accessible to diverse audiences.

Pittman is the author of "Survival Chinese Lessons" and "The Bells Are Not Silent: Stories of Church Bells in China." The latter book was inspired by her discovery of a 126-year-old American bell in a church in southwest China, which led her to travel across the country in search of historic church bells from France, Germany, Russia, and the United States. Her personal blog, "Outside-In," explores topics related to China, Minnesota, travel, and cross-cultural living.
