Joann Farrell Quinn

Dr. Joann Farrell Quinn is a nationally recognized expert on emotional intelligence and leadership development. She is the founding Associate Dean of Faculty Development, founding Director of the Office of Ethics, Leadership, and Professionalism, and an Associate Professor at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine, where she also serves as Assistant Vice President for USF Health. In partnership with Tampa General Hospital, Dr. Quinn is the founding Academic Director of the People Development Institute and a member of the CEO’s behavioral research team.

A dynamic and engaging speaker, Dr. Quinn regularly delivers keynotes, talks, and workshops on emotional intelligence, leadership competencies, and organizational culture. She is the founding convener of a national consortium on leadership in medicine and has been invited to speak to audiences across healthcare, business, and academia.

Her research focuses on emotional and social competencies as a foundation for leadership effectiveness. She has co-authored "Cultivating Leadership in Medicine" (volumes 1 & 2) and "Leading Self and Others with Emotional Intelligence" (Kendall Hunt Publishing), and her work has appeared in leading academic journals. Beyond her research, Dr. Quinn is passionate about practitioner scholarship—helping leaders apply research methods to improve decision-making and organizational outcomes.

Prior to academia, Dr. Quinn built a successful career in capital markets and investment management, serving as President of the Security Traders Association of Florida. Since 2007, she has led JFQ Consulting, specializing in leadership and team development, and she has produced award-winning educational video series for physicians on coaching, conflict management, mentoring, and teamwork.

Dr. Quinn earned her PhD in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University, where she studied under renowned emotional intelligence scholar Richard Boyatzis; her MBA from Syracuse University; and her BA from the University of Rochester. When she is not teaching, speaking, or writing, she enjoys great food and wine, and life at home with her husband Harold, their son Ean, and a lively crew of rescue dogs and cats.
