Jimmy Connors

Jimmy Connors is recognized as one of the most decorated competitors in professional tennis. Known for his intense competitiveness, Connors holds three prominent Open Era men's singles records: 109 titles, 1,557 matches played, and 1,274 match wins. His achievements include eight singles majors—an Open Era joint-record five US Opens, two Wimbledons, and one Australian Open—along with three year-end championships. He is the only tennis player to win the US Open title on three different surfaces.

Connors was the first left-handed player and the first with a two-handed backhand to reach the world No. 1 ranking. His rise, alongside the emergence of Björn Borg, marked a significant shift in a sport previously dominated by one-handed players.

After turning professional, Connors quickly established himself as a dominant force on the ATP Tour. In one notable season, he became the second man in the Open Era to win three major titles in a calendar year, though he was not permitted to participate in the French Open. Connors reached the ATP world No. 1 ranking and held it for 160 consecutive weeks, a record later surpassed by Roger Federer. He was the year-end No. 1 player for five straight years and held the top ranking for a total of 268 weeks during his career. The core of his career saw him win five major championships, appear in six additional finals, and reach a record five straight US Open finals, the first male player to do so since Bill Tilden. Connors also won the ITF World Championship and received the ATP Player of the Year award.

A defining chapter of Connors' career was his comeback after a period of injury and decline. After dropping to No. 936 in the world rankings and undergoing surgery on his left wrist, he returned to play 14 tournaments the following year. Connors then made a notable run to the US Open semifinals, which he described as "the best 11 days of my tennis career." As the only player in history to win the US Open on all three surfaces, Connors won a record-tying five championships, appeared in seven finals, and played in a record 12 semifinals. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Beyond his playing career, Connors has remained active in the tennis world as a coach, commentator, and author. He coached American tennis player Andy Roddick, who reached the final of the US Open under his guidance. Connors has also served as a commentator and analyst for Tennis Channel and provided commentary for BBC during multiple Wimbledon tournaments alongside John McEnroe. His autobiography, "The Outsider," received the British Sports Book Award in the Best Autobiography/Biography category. The book offers a candid look at his life and career, highlighting his enduring influence in tennis as a player, coach, and commentator.
