Jim Koch Biography
Jim Koch is the Founder and Executive Chairman of the Boston Beer Company, best known for creating Samuel Adams Boston Lager and pioneering the American craft beer movement. A sixth-generation brewer, Koch combined a family legacy in brewing with a strong academic foundation, holding a B.A., J.D., and M.B.A. from Harvard University.
Before launching his own business, Koch worked as a manufacturing consultant at the Boston Consulting Group. In 1984, driven by a desire to create something of his own, he revived a 150-year-old family beer recipe and founded the Boston Beer Company. Despite entering a market dominated by large corporations, his flagship beer—Samuel Adams Boston Lager—was voted “Best Beer in America” just six weeks after its launch at the Great American Beer Festival.
Under Koch’s leadership, the company grew rapidly and went public in 1995. Today, Samuel Adams is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality and innovation in brewing. Koch stepped down as President and CEO in 2000 but continues to serve as Executive Chairman, remaining actively involved in the company’s brewing and strategic direction.
