
Jessie Mueller is a Broadway actress and singer known for her work in musical theater. Mueller studied musical theater at Syracuse University before beginning her professional career in Chicago, where she was named Actor of the Year by the Chicago Tribune. She received two Joseph Jefferson Awards for her performances as Carrie Pipperidge in "Carousel" and Amalia Balash in "She Loves Me." Her Chicago stage work also included performances with Chicago Shakespeare Theater and an appearance at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon as Lady Catrin Mortimer in "Henry IV."
Mueller moved to New York City to star in a Broadway revival of "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever," earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She continued to build her Broadway résumé with roles such as Cinderella in "Into the Woods" at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park and the dual roles of Helena Landless and Miss Janet Conover in the Broadway revival of "The Mystery of Edwin Drood," which garnered her a second Drama Desk Award nomination.
Mueller originated the title role in "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" on Broadway, earning the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical, the Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical, and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. She later originated the role of Jenna Hunterson in "Waitress," receiving nominations for both a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award.
Mueller received three major nominations for her portrayal of Julie Jordan in the Broadway revival of "Carousel," including a fifth Drama Desk nomination and a fourth Tony Award nomination, becoming the first actress in any Broadway production of "Carousel" to receive such recognition for the role. She has received a Drama Desk Award for every eligible role and is the only woman to be Tony-nominated for every role she has originated.
Beyond the stage, Mueller made her feature film debut as Judith Martin in the film "The Post." She also portrayed Loretta Lynn in the Lifetime movie "Patsy & Loretta," earning a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination for Best Actress in a Movie/Miniseries. Mueller has appeared on Broadway and at Steppenwolf in Tracy Letts's play "The Minutes" and received an Emmy Award nomination for her performance in the PBS broadcast of "Chicago Voices."
