Jerome Rand

Jerome Rand is a sailor, author, adventurer, and motivational speaker known for his solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe. Inspired by the adventure stories of solo sailors from the 1960s, Rand began his sailing career after completing a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, an experience that influenced his pursuit of challenging outdoor adventures and set the stage for his goal of sailing alone around the world.

Rand taught sailing on inland lakes and participated in yacht deliveries between the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. During a trip to the British Virgin Islands, he joined the Bitter End Yacht Club, working at the watersports center for nine years. There, his ambition to sail around the world took shape. On a limited budget, Rand purchased a classic Westsail 32 and embarked on a solo journey that would define his career in the sailing and adventure community.

Aboard his Westsail 32, Mighty Sparrow, Rand completed a solo, non-stop circumnavigation, covering over 29,000 miles in 271 days. The route included crossings of the North and South Atlantic, the Southern Ocean near the Cape of Good Hope, and passages south of Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand before rounding Cape Horn and the Five Great Capes. The voyage concluded in Gloucester, Massachusetts after nine months and 29,807 miles.

Rand is among a select group of sailors to have completed such a journey in a small boat. He managed provisions carefully, relying on a hand-operated watermaker that failed during the trip, forcing him to depend on rainwater and snow. The journey tested his mental and physical endurance, requiring perseverance through severe weather and challenging conditions.

Rand has built a career as a writer, speaker, and media personality, focusing on adventure, resilience, and sailing. He hosts the podcast "Sailing Into Oblivion," offers sailing coaching, and delivers motivational talks. His memoir, "Sailing Into Oblivion," details his solo circumnavigation and provides insight into life aboard a small sailboat during a long-duration voyage. Rand has also produced a series of children's books based on his experiences, sharing lessons in courage and determination with younger audiences. He regularly speaks at yacht clubs and provides training and coaching for aspiring sailors, as well as educational talks for schools, clubs, and corporate events. Rand's story highlights themes of resilience, self-reliance, and the pursuit of ambitious goals within the sailing and adventure community.
