Jerome Avery Biography
Jerome Avery is a four-time Paralympic guide runner and three-time medalist, working with U.S. Paralympics Track & Field since 2004. He runs alongside the world’s top visually-impaired sprinters such as Lex Gillette, Josiah Jamison and world record holder David Brown. Bound by a tether, Avery and his runner sprint side-by-side, communicating by touch and sound with every synched stride as Avery tugs the tether to keep his sprinter in line to reach the finish line.
Avery was once an Olympic hopeful himself, finishing in the top 20 in the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials and in the top 15 in the 2004 Olympic Trials. In high school, Avery was his school’s MVP all four years, and ranked fifth in the state of California in the 100m dash. He competed two years at Fresno City College before training at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Center under former sprinter Brooks Johnson.
Off the track, Avery is a visual artist, mentor, and motivational speaker, inspiring athletes and individuals impacted by disabilities to overcome adversity and see endless possibilities. He has years of experience working with clubs, teams and corporations, and speaks powerfully on teamwork and empowering others to reach their full potential.
