Jens Burchardt

Jens Burchardt is recognized for his expertise in climate impact and the low-carbon economy. He serves as Boston Consulting Group's global expert on climate impact and is a co-founder of the firm's Center for Climate and Sustainability. Burchardt holds the title of managing director and partner within Boston Consulting Group's Climate Impact division. His work spans the energy transition, advising clients in both the private and public sectors on strategies for preparing for a low-carbon economy and advancing low-carbon technologies such as hydrogen, power-to-x, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).

Burchardt has supported decarbonization projects with investment volumes totaling several billion euros across sectors including oil and gas, power, steel, cement, chemicals, automotive, shipping, aviation, and consumer goods. He has also assisted clients in establishing new low-carbon businesses in areas such as hydrogen, e-fuels, and carbon credits. Burchardt led Boston Consulting Group's emission reduction studies, including "Klimapfade für Deutschland" ("Climate Paths for Germany"), in collaboration with German industry. This study is regarded as one of the most comprehensive assessments of national emissions reduction potential, analyzing how Germany can achieve significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions. The Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie (BDI), the German Industry Association, commissioned the study and endorsed its core findings, calling for more systematic climate action by the German government.

Burchardt is the author of several Boston Consulting Group publications on climate change, frequently cited in national and international media. His advisory work includes engagements with the World Economic Forum, the Conference of the Parties unit, and several German government commissions on decarbonization. He is known for translating complex climate economics into actionable strategies for global policy and business leaders.

Burchardt is also active as a public communicator on climate issues. In his TED talk, "How we can curb climate change by spending two percent more on everything," he discusses the costs and considerations of producing environmentally friendly products and explains why addressing climate change can be economically feasible. He examines production in energy-intensive sectors and argues that adjusting consumer prices can significantly contribute to lowering carbon emissions. His work focuses on making the economic case for climate action accessible to audiences worldwide.
