Jenny Lorenzo is a Cuban-American actress, comedian, writer, and content creator whose work has contributed to Latino representation in digital media. Known for her involvement with We Are Mitú, Lorenzo is also one of the original co-founders of BuzzFeed's Pero Like. Motivated by the lack of Latino representation onscreen, Lorenzo began to address the entertainment industry's limited perspective on Latina identity as she pursued her acting career.
Lorenzo created "The Abuela Cinematic Universe," an online series of skits inspired by her Cuban-American family, particularly her late grandmother, Orquídea Díaz. Her Abuela character gained widespread popularity, attracting millions of views and resonating with audiences through comedic and nostalgic portrayals of first-generation Cuban-American experiences. The character's appeal extended beyond Latinx audiences, with viewers from diverse backgrounds recognizing similarities to their own family members, highlighting shared experiences among immigrant communities.
Lorenzo has received recognition including the Tecla Award for Best Fictional Character and Creator of the Year, as well as the NALIP Trailblazer Award for her work with Pero Like. She participated in the Women in Comedy program at YouTube Space LA in partnership with Elizabeth Banks and WhoHaHa, where she was selected for mentorship by Banks. Her achievements underscore her impact on Latinx storytelling and digital media.
Expanding her career into voice acting, Lorenzo has voiced recurring characters in "Jellystone" on HBO Max, "Victor and Valentino" on Cartoon Network, and "Sharkdog" on Netflix Jr., and made a guest appearance on Nickelodeon's "Rugrats." She also voiced a character in Dan Povenmire's "Hamster & Gretel" for Disney, earning a nomination for Best Voice Actor at the Imagen Awards. In addition to acting, Lorenzo has hosted "What's Up, Disney+" on the Disney+ YouTube channel and served as a guest host on Nerdist News.
Lorenzo co-hosts the podcast "Hyphenated" with Joanna Hausmann, where they discuss Latino identity in real life and media. She has also served as the Spanish-language spokeswoman for a Rocket Mortgage national commercial campaign and is a member of the Upright Citizens Brigade's Betty team, participating in their monthly character showcase. Lorenzo advocates for authentic representation in media, encouraging others to create opportunities for cultural visibility onscreen.
