Jennifer Kaufman has spent more than 20 years as a school principal at special education schools in northern New Jersey, where she has guided hundreds of families through IEPs, behavioral supports and the complex journey of raising a child with autism. When her own grandchild was diagnosed, her professional expertise gained an entirely new dimension: the view from the other side of the desk. That experience became the foundation for her 2025 book, "Grandparenting on the Spectrum: A Journey from Both Sides of the Desk," which has connected with readers across the country who finally feel seen in their specific role in the autism journey.
Kaufman speaks to grandparent groups, family organizations, universities and professional conferences. Through her training company, First Response Autism Solutions LLC, she prepares law enforcement agencies, police academies and campus security teams for real-world interactions with individuals with autism. She has appeared on television and on numerous podcasts. She holds graduate degrees in educational technology and educational leadership, with certifications as both a New Jersey principal and superintendent.
