Jehmu Greene is a television commentator, social justice advocate, and political and media strategist whose career spans more than three decades of grassroots organizing, nonprofit leadership, and national media commentary. Greene began her political career in Texas, working as executive director of the Texas Young Democrats and on Governor Ann Richards' campaign. She left college and moved to Washington, D.C., launching a career focused on advocacy for underrepresented communities and democratic participation.
Beginning in 1998, Greene served as director of women's outreach and southern political director for the Democratic National Committee. She later served as president of Rock the Vote, where membership expanded significantly, millions of new voters were registered, and youth voter turnout saw a record increase between two presidential elections. Greene launched the first online voter registration tool in the country and was the first African American president of Rock the Vote. She went on to serve as national director of Project Vote before becoming president of the Women's Media Center, a media advocacy organization founded by Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem. At the Women's Media Center, Greene designed the "Name It, Change It" campaign to address sexism against women candidates and trained progressive women to amplify their voices in the media.
Greene was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of State to serve on the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, further establishing her as a trusted voice in national policy circles. She spent more than a decade as a political analyst on Fox News, appearing across Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. Greene has also appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including "The O'Reilly Factor," "The Daily Show," "Anderson Cooper 360," CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News, and "The Tavis Smiley Show." She co-founded Define American, a media and culture organization focused on dialogue surrounding immigrants, identity, and citizenship in America, contributing to the national conversation on immigration policy and reform.
Greene has run for chair of the Democratic National Committee and has worked on more than 20 political campaigns at the local, state, and national levels, including serving as an advisor and surrogate for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. As founder of Barbara's Legacy, a leadership initiative supporting women of color, Greene continues her commitment to training and empowering women to amplify their voices in the media. She is also a founding board member of VoteRunLead, a nonpartisan organization that has trained more than 35,000 women to run for office.
As a distinguished fellow at the Athena Center for Leadership at Barnard College and board chair of VoteRunLead, Greene contributes to political conversation as a speaker, television commentator, and media trainer. She has received the National Conference for Community and Justice's Community Service Award, the American Association of University Women's Women of Distinction Award, and the National Council for Research on Women's Women Making a Difference Award. Essence magazine has named Greene among its "40 Women Under 40 Shaping the World" and "35 Most Beautiful and Remarkable Women in the World." Greene's career is characterized by bridging divides, mobilizing communities, and contributing to American political life through media, advocacy, and leadership development.
