Jeffrey James Binney

Jeffrey James Binney is a Salt Lake City-based filmmaker, stand-up comedian, ultrarunner, motivational speaker, and adventure travel host known for his work in endurance sports, comedy, and personal transformation. After studying musical theater in college and moving to New York City to pursue a stage career—often cast in comedic roles—Binney's life shifted when his mother's health declined. Returning home during her final months, he discovered Trail Runner Magazine in a hospital waiting room, where an article about the Leadville Trail 100 inspired him to begin running.

Motivated by the loss of his mother to obesity-related heart disease, Binney, who weighed 340 pounds at the time, started running and progressed through a 20-mile race, several marathons, and a 50-mile event. He trained with ultrarunning coach Ian Sharman and attempted the Leadville Trail 100 in Colorado, where he was pulled from the race at the 44.5-mile mark for missing the cutoff. Refusing to give up, Binney completed the Rocky Raccoon 100 six months later, finishing his first 100-mile race and losing over 100 pounds in the process.

Binney documented his journey in the film "Once Is Enough," a "docu-comedy" that blends footage of his ultramarathon experience with a live stand-up comedy special. The film, available on Amazon Prime, explores the challenges of 100-mile racing and the emotional story behind his transformation. Trail Runner Magazine described it as possibly "the first stand-up routine about ultrarunning." The film received recognition within the endurance sports community, highlighting Binney's unique perspective at the intersection of comedy, athletics, and resilience.

In addition to filmmaking, Binney has gained a significant following on social media, with trail dance videos on TikTok and Instagram accumulating millions of views. One video, recreating a scene from "Dirty Dancing" on a snow-covered bridge in Big Cottonwood Canyon, surpassed 3 million views. Binney has also completed a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, covering the entire 2,500-mile route, and has partnered with Brooks Running. As a gay and plus-size athlete, he advocates for body positivity and inclusivity in outdoor sports, challenging stereotypes about athleticism.
